Parks or parking?
Isn’t this an attractive landscape?
Yup, nothing says “Welcome to our beautiful community” like acres of sun-baked asphalt…
We often refer to Winona as “the Island City” -- river on one side, bluffs on the other with only a narrow old sandbar for all of us to call home… Land is at a premium here, precious, too scarce to devote to parking cars as a priority – especially downtown and in our core neighborhoods.
“But we hafta have cars…” Yeah, but if they’re just gonna sit there for eight hours while you’re at work. Or just need to be parked a couple hours while you’re at a play or a concert… maybe parking at a remote lot with a shuttle to where you need to go…or a transit system that coordinates with shift changes so driving is an option rather than a necessity might be some things to think about...
But parking is just one of the challenges our land poor sandbar city faces. We need to be creative with zoning and land use regulations – to see to it that every acre is put to its highest and best use – like housing for people rather than automobiles…
We need places to live, parks and other places to play, places where enterprising folks and start businesses and help our community prosper… We need to look ahead.
We should do better. Together, we can do better. Vote Christenson for council.
I’m Jerome Christenson and I’d park my approval on this message.
