We'll all do better...
It was twenty years ago Tuesday while I was in my kitchen fixing lunch that MPR’s Midday program was interrupted with the announcement that Senator Paul Wellstone’s plane had crashed just short of the runway at the Virginia-Eveleth airport. All aboard were believed dead.
He was just Paul when I got acquainted with him back in the early ‘80s while he was working with farm families while we were struggling to save our land and our homes as the farm economy and our rural communities collapsed around us.
People – families – their well-being, their security, their quality of life were his unchanging, unchallengable priorities. – priorities I am proud to share. “We all do better when we all do better” was his slogan, his mantra, the core of everything he strove to achieve…
He was right, you know… We all share in what we call “the common good…” We all have a share in this community we call Winona… and we all … every one of us … deserves a good place to live, a good place to work, a good place to play…
We all do better when we all do better … my pledge to you is to do my best, to do all I can, to see to it we all do do better.
