WWJLD? (What Would John Latsch Do?)

Ever since I filed for the city council, I’ve learned the first thing folks ask after “Are you crazy?” is “What are you gonna do?”

The politically safe answer is that I’ll use my best judgment, apply my best knowledge and experience, and listen to the advice of the people who have to live with the decisions we, as a council, will make. As far as promises go, that’s one I’m sure I can keep and one I know I can live with.

But as I’ve been thinking about it, there’s one more thing I’d add to that. When it comes to making decisions about Winona’s future and the lives of people who live and work here I’d also pose the question, “What would John Latsch do?”

If you play golf at Westfield, cool off on Latsch beach, hike in Aghaming Park, or spend time in any number of places doing any number of things here in Winona or around the region you’re enjoying John Latsch’s legacy. He was a wholesale grocer – one of the most successful businessmen in town – but his gifts of property and money quite literally shaped our city and region. A rich man who never owned a car, lived alone in a modest house in a modest neighborhood, and whose idea of a wild weekend was camping out on a sandbar with a jug of buttermilk and a week’s worth of newpapers he’d been too busy to read, his life’s choices would benefit everyone for generations to come.

So yeah, what do I want to do as a member of the Winona City Council? I want to do what John Latsch would do … for Winona, it doesn’t get any better than that.
